Fun Things To Do & Make!
Bird Cakes
1 part peanut butter
2 parts bird see
5 parts cornmeal
1 part melted suet
Mix all ingredients together. Spoon into paper-lined muffin tins and cool in refrigerator. When hardened, cakes may be removed from the tins and stored frozen. (A similar idea: Pine Cone Treat
Add peanut butter, bird see, and cornmeal to melted suet. As mixture cools, spoon it between pine cone scales and hang in a tree outside!)
Fruit Juice Pops
1 (6 ounce) can frozen 100% juice concentrate
2 cups plain yogurt
2 teaspoons vanilla
6 small cups
6 wooden or plastic sticks or spoons
Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl. Pour the mixture into the cups. Insert a stick/spoon for a handle. Freeze until firm. To remove, hold the cup under water for a few seconds. (Snack suggestion: One fruit juice pop & four vanilla wafers.)
Play dough
1 cup oatmeal
½ cup water
½ cup flour
Guide your child to knead all ingredients together until it is soft and well mixed. This recipe makes a lot and is extremely easy. You can add color by mixing in a tiny bit of washable paint.
Bubbles
1 cup Joy or Dawn (dish washing detergent)
2 cups WARM water
3 tablespoons Glycerin
½ teaspoon sugar
Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Items to blow bubbles with: plastic strawberry basket, colander, plastic six pack holder, funnel, plastic straw cut in a slant, several straws taped together, plastic/paper cup with hole cut in bottom
Sidewalk Chalk
2 cups water
2 cups Plaster of Paris
2 tablespoons tempera paint (wet or dry)
holder (we used cups but the instructions call for a toilet paper tube with duct tape over one end)
Combine everything and stir. Pour into holders and let stand to dry on newspaper until firm. Remove from holder and let dry completely. Ready in about 1-1.5 hours. One recipe filled 4 small cups. *Remember: Don’t put plaster down sink drains!
Ice cream in a bag
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
½ cup milk or half-and-half
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size zip-type plastic bag
1 gallon-size zip-type plastic bag
Fill the large bag half full of ice and add the rock salt. Seal the bag. Put milk, vanilla extract and sugar into the small bag and seal it. Place the small bag inside the large one and seal again carefully. Shake until the mixture is ice cream – about 5 minutes! |
